FORT scientists hold science plan training for staff in the Bureau of Land Management
Sarah Carter, Sam Jordan, Alex Stoneburner, and Sarah Whipple hosted science plan training for staff in the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) who manage units in BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System.
BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System was established two decades ago to conserve, protect, and restore nationally significant landscapes that have outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values. Science plans outline priority management questions and science needs for managing the resources of National Monuments and National Conservation Areas.
The training focused on sharing a set of tools for developing science plans for National Monuments and National Conservation Areas. The science planning tools, coproduced by USGS and BLM, recommend a process and steps for science planning, provide instructions and templates for writing science plans, and provide guidance for considering climate change, environmental justice, and Indigenous Knowledges in science plan development. Tools also identify key resources needed to inform science plans and strategies for identifying and prioritizing science information needs.
This effort is a partnership between the BLM National Landscape Conservation System Program, the BLM Arizona State Office, and the Fort Collins Science Center.
