Analytical Geochemistry

The Analytical Geochemistry Branch performs sample preparation, routine chemical analyses, mineralogy and microchemical analyses on behalf of the Mineral Resources Program, the Energy and Minerals Mission Area, other USGS Mission Areas and other federal agencies. Large quantities of routine geochemical analyses are made available through an external geochemistry contract. They also develop novel techniques for materials not amenable to these routine procedures and support a sample and data archive of over three million samples. They also offer the capability for identification and quantification of minerals (hyperspectral imaging, X-ray diffraction) and microanalysis of solid samples (scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry).

The USGS Mineral Resources Program and other USGS scientists need specialized routine analysis in order to conduct their research. The Analytical Chemistry project facilitates the ability of USGS scientists to obtain needed analyses.
