USGS Chesapeake Bay Study Locations Related to Theme 1 Activities

These layers are a compilation of study sites, watersheds, and areas of interest associated with the USGS Chesapeake Bay Theme 1 activities. Locations in this dataset were compiled from various USGS Chesapeake Bay activities and with input from USGS scientists to indicate study areas under multiple projects associated with USGS Chesapeake Bay Science Theme 1 activities.

Rusty Patched Bumble Bee Pollen Metagenome

The rusty-patched bumble bee (Bombus affinis) is a listed species under the Endangered Species Act of the United States. While understood to be a highly generalist forager, little is known on the role that limited floral resources or shifting floral community composition could have played in B. affinis decline. Determining which floral species provide suitable B. affinis forage could assist...

Land Cover, Climate, and Geological conditions summarized within Maryland DNR Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) Catchments

This dataset consists of several measures of landscape characteristics, each of which is summarized from raster data within spatial polygons. These spatial polygons represent the land area upstream of sampled stream reaches. These stream reaches were sampled by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for the Maryland Biological Stream Survey program during survey rounds one, two, and f...

Stream temperature and sculpin growth data collected from Catoctin Mountain Park in 2019

This Data Release includes records of stream temperature during summer months of 2019 (10 sites) and records of Blue Ridge sculpin (Cottus caeruleomentum) weight for fish held in experimental enclosures for 45 days during the temperature sampling period (5 sites).

Presence and prevalence of pathogens among amphibians of Catoctin Mountain Park, 2014

Data described herein was collected by USGS personnel and the project funded by USGS and the National Park Service (Catoctin Mountain Park) through a FY14 NRPP project involving both agencies and developed to detect the presence and prevalence of ranavirus and chytrid pathogens among amphibians of Catoctin Mountain Park (CATO). Supplemental molecular analyses were performed on behalf of

Topobathymetric elevation models of the upper Delaware River, USA - Version 1

This dataset includes topographic elevations (in meters) surrounding and bathymetric elevations within the upper Delaware River (USA). Bathymetric lidar data was acquired using the Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar, version B. The EAARL-B is a successor instrument to the original EAARL bathymetric LiDAR sensor developed for mapping coral reef environments in clear water, b

Abundance of 50 transcripts from microdissected liver samples of smallmouth bass

There is an increasing emphasis on effects-based monitoring to document responses associated with exposure to complex mixtures of chemicals, climate change, pathogens, parasites and other environmental stressors in fish populations. For decades aquatic monitoring programs have included the collection of tissues preserved for microscopic pathology. Consequently, formalin-fixed, paraffi

Physiological changes in response to salinity and cortisol treatment in Atlantic sturgeon

The dataset are the results of studies examining the osmoregulatory physiology of Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus). Two experiments were conducted on physiological responses to salinity change, and another experiment on the effects of cortisol treatment on osmoregulation.

Pine Creek Freshwater Mussel Qualitative Surveys: 1995 - 2009

Data are included for field surveys conducted for freshwater mussels within the Pine Creek watershed in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Timed search (qualitative) surveys were conducted in ~200 meter sections of river between 1995 and 2009; The number of mussels of each species and associated search time were recorded for each survey section to determine a catch per unit ef

Neversink River freshwater mussel surveys: 2006-2009

Data are included for two types of field surveys conducted for freshwater mussels within the Neversink River in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Timed search (qualitative) surveys were conducted in consecutive ~200 meter sections of river in 2006 and 2007; a subset of these sections were re-surveyed qualitatively in 2009. The number of mussels of each species and associated

Ambystomatid salamander population and breeding pond habitat data for the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (2001 - 2003)

This database contains breeding pond use data (i.e., egg mass and larval abundance counts) of three ambystomatid salamander species (Spotted salamander, Jefferson salamander, and marbled salamander) collected from 200 individual aquatic habitats (ponds, wetlands, and impoundments) in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation. Data were collected between the years 2001 and 2

Video data for trout abundance estimation

Rapid advances in video technology are enabling new strategies for species abundance estimation. Here we provide estimates of fish abundance derived from video data collected in a series of stream pools in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia (n=41). Two 360-degree cameras were simultaneously used at each pool site where 15-minutes of underwater footage was collected. Environmental data are
