Filter Total Items: 65Organic Wastewater Contaminants in source & finished water - NJA
The frequent occurrence of OWCs in streams, many of which are used as sources for drinking-water supplies, gives rise to concern over the potential for these compounds to occur in drinking water and, thus, the potential for adverse human- health effects due to chronic exposure to these compounds. Limited sampling conducted by the USGS indicate that some OWCs that occur in source streams are...Northern New Jersey Radionuclides
Elevated gross alpha-particle activity in groundwater has recently been documented from scattered areas in northern New Jersey. Initial data compilations indicate most of this alpha-particle activity is attributable to long-lived isotopes of U, and to a lesser extent, the long-lived progeny, Ra-226. The project will consist of three phases to be completed cooperatively between the USGS and NJDEP...Mercury at Atlantic City Naval Air Station
Atlantic City Naval Air Station (Atlantic City NAS) located in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey covers an area of approximately 5,000 acres approximately 10 miles northwest of Atlantic City, in Atlantic County, New Jersey. The focus of this USACE investigation is the potential identification of mercury source areas and the migration of mercury within Area U (Absecon Creek Watershed), which...Hydrologic Changes Winslow Township
The Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system underlies Winslow Township. Under natural conditions, water from the Kirkwood-Cohansey discharges to the perennial streams of the Great Egg Harbor River basin. This is referred to as the baseflow of the stream. Withdrawals by wells from the Kirkwood-Cohansey intercept ground water that would have discharged to a stream. In addition, if withdrawals are of...EPA biofuels and drinking water supplies
The US EPA Office of Research and Development is carrying out a comprehensive evaluation of the potential impacts on water quality and water supply resulting from the increased use of biofuels. Contamination resulting from releases of biofuel from underground storage tanks may impact ground water that is available for municipal water supply. This concern is greatest for regions of the country that...Development of Reconstructed Streamflows at Stream Gaging Stations and Ungaged Sites in the Passaic and Hackensack River Basins , Water years 1922-2007, Phase 1
Since 1922, there have been significant human related changes in the Passaic and Hackensack River Basins including significant hydrologic modifications as a result of water supply development and land use changes that impact the runoff characteristics of these watersheds. Since the goal of the NJDEP modeling effort is to determine the safe yield of the major water supply systems under present day...Augmentation of Results of Study of Groundwater Mounding Beneath Stormwater Infiltration Structures
In preparing guidelines for using the published USGS tables of simulation results, the NJDEP determined additional simulations are needed that include infiltration rates out of the recharge basins that are equivalent to the simulated infiltration capacity of the soil. Published simulations results are from simulations with infiltration rates that are less than the infiltration capacity of the soil...Background Metals in Surface Water
Results of water-quality sampling in tributaries and major rivers of New Jersey have revealed that arsenic levels that exceed the human-health-based Surface Water Quality Standard (SWQS) are widespread. Exceedances of the mercury SWQS are prevalent, although less widespread than arsenic exceedances.Phase II Trackdown of PCBs and PCDD/Fs in the Elizabeth River, New Jersey
Data collected during Phase I of the NJ Toxics Reduction Workplan for NY-NJ Harbor (NJTRWP) at the Elizabeth River head-of-tide sampling site (and in the downstream tidal Elizabeth River) show elevated levels for contaminants compared to other locations in the harbor. An additional NJTRWP Phase II study was conducted in July/August 2003 in an effort to determine if either of the two minor...Monitoring Mercury in Wet Deposition
Mercury accumulates in biological tissue through complex reactions (bioaccumulation). Bacteria convert environmental inorganic mercury into methyl mercury (Me-Hg). This Me-Hg form is more toxic and more difficult to remove from bacterial systems than inorganic mercury. As humans consume fish, the Me-Hg in the fish is also consumed. Neurotoxicity is the most important health concern with mercury...Mercury Variability in domestic wells
Since 1982, mercury (Hg) concentrations that exceed the State and USEPA maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 2 g/L have been reported for water withdrawn from more than 600 domestic wells finished in the unconfined Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system in southern New Jersey. Actions have been taken to protect well owners from further exposure by providing treatment systems or hookups to public-water...Pinelands Kirkwood-Cohansey
The study examines the structure and function of the hydrologic system supporting Pinelands aquatic and wetland communities and the hydrologic and ecological response to groundwater-withdrawal stress. USGS components of the study focus on various aspects of the hydrologic system that controls groundwater and surface-water flow, depth of water in wetlands, and interactions between the groundwater...
