Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area Study Completed
The Sandy Hook Unit, Gateway National Recreation Area (hereafter Sandy Hook) in New Jersey is a 10-kilometer-long spit visited by thousands of people each year who take advantage of the historical and natural resources and recreational opportunities.

Sandy Hook is a barrier-island spit that extends from the Navesink River at the southern end to New York Harbor at the northern tip, and has experienced long-term erosion and deposition from overwash events making it vulnerable to global climate change and the potential for saltwater intrusion and inundation.

The Bayside Holly Forest, one of only two known old-growth American holly (Ilex opaca) maritime forests, is particularly vulnerable to global climate change because of the proximity of the water table to land surface in low-lying areas and the potential for saltwater intrusion and inundation.
To measure salinity changes three shallow wells and one deep well were installed near the shoreline extending inland along a transect.
An additional shallow well was installed approximately 1500 ft inland from the bay shoreline to measure groundwater levels.
