Instructions for Inclusion Body Disease of Cranes (IBDC) submissions.
IBDC serology is performed as a service by the USGS National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) upon request. This testing is to assist with compliance and permit requirements of the USFWS Offices of Scientific and Management Authority.
- Please submit permit-associated samples at least 21 days before animal anticipated movement date.
Collection and Shipping Instructions:
1. Prior to collecting and shipping sample, advise USGS National Wildlife Health Center of shipping/arrival date by contacting the NWHC Epidemiology Team at NWHC-epi@usgs.gov or (608) 270-2480.
2. The epidemiologist on duty will provide you guidance and a fillable PDF data sheet that needs to be emailed back prior to sending the sample.
3. Submit at least 0.5 mls of frozen serum per bird in labeled vial. Note: Plasma is not a preferred specimen for this testing.
4. Use a sturdy insulated container. Use sufficient ice packs to keep the specimen cool for the time required to deliver the package to NWHC. Containers and ice packs will be returned to submitters upon request (a prepaid return shipping label is required).
5. Include a paper copy of the NWHC IBDC data sheet in a ziploc bag.
6. Ship to NWHC by overnight express using the following address:

7. Results will be sent within 21 days. Non-permit associated submission results could take up to 28 days.
