This event was intended for students and early career scientists to learn how to obtain a career with USGS and meet USGS scientists across three different disciplines.
The event began with an overview of the USGS from regional director Holly Weyers, followed by presentations from USGS Human Resources and the USGS Regional Diversity Council.
Three USGS Centers participated in this virtual event to showcase various science career paths within USGS: the Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center (CFWSC), St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC), and Wetland and Aquatic Research Center (WARC). The directors of each center provided overviews of the goals, philosophy, and the research conducted at each location. Then, attendees broke out into three topic-specific panel discussions with USGS science staff with expertise in Biology and Ecosystems, Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources, and Water Resources. Attendees had an opportunity to ask the panelists questions about their background, experience, research, and career paths.
While the event focused on opportunities in Florida and the Caribbean, the event was open to students and early career scientists located anywhere in the world. We hope you were inspired by our scientists’ passion and research and consider pursuing a career with USGS!
