Evaluation of the toxicity of niclosamide to two fresh water mussel species and larval sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) when exposed to granular Bayluscide Active

Niclosamide (5-chloro-N-[2-chloro-4-nitrophenyl]-2-hydroxybenzamide; NIC) is the active ingredient in the 3.2% granular formulation of Bayluscide® (gB). is applied to assess populations of Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) larva that are too deep to electro fish or remove larva in habitats and too large to treat with liquid formulations of lampricides in a cost effective manner.  Concerns regarding the impact of gB applications on non-target fauna, including at-risk freshwater mussels, have been expressed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Ecological Services and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Species at Risk Branch (SAR).  With large scale treatments of the St. Clair River potentially scheduled for 2019 and the concerns raised by partner agencies, there is a need to evaluate the effect of gB to at-risk freshwater mussels.

Objectives

 

1) Determine the toxicity and sub-lethal effects of niclosamide to the Eastern pondmussel (Ligumia nasuta), the Round hickorynut (Obovaria subrotunda), and larval Sea Lampreys in: (a) flow through aquaria (bioassay) containing St. Clair River sediment and water and (b) in situ in the St. Clair River, MI.

2) Measure the concentration of NIC residue in sediment and water near mussels in: (a) flow through aquaria (bioassay) containing St. Clair River sediment and water and (b) in situ in the St. Clair River, MI over 48 hours.

3) Conduct a risk assessment for fresh water mussels in the St. Clair River based on the data obtained in objectives 1 and 2.
