Kelp and Sea Urchin Data Obtained by SCUBA at Shallow Nearshore Sites along the North Pacific Rim from Bering Island to Southeast Alaska Obtained over Multiple Decades Beginning in 1987

Between 1987 and 2021, over 600 nearshore rocky bottom sites were sampled by scuba at 38 locations on the north Pacific Rim ranging from Bering Island, along the Aleutian Island chain and the Alaska Peninsula to southeast Alaska. Sites were plotted at random from along the coasts of islands or areas designated. Hard substrate was targeted. Most sites were sampled more than once, years or decades a

Assessing Connectivity among Coastal and Interior Cactus Wrens in California using Population Genomics (2021)

The Coastal Cactus Wren is a species of high conservation concern in southern California. The goal of this project was to obtain taxonomic resolution of subspecies boundaries between coastal and desert populations of Cactus Wrens. We collected genetic samples from Cactus Wrens at California desert sites and combined this dataset with previously collected samples from coastal populations to resolve

San Diego River Shot Hole Borer Study

Data presented are results of vegetation sampling conducted in 2019-20 and 2023 in 24 survey plots to document the status of infestation by shot hole borers (Euwallacea sp.) on the riparian vegetation at the San Diego River. This dataset presents location, percent cover of different vegetation types, and number of seedlings for each survey plot. In addition, for each tree and sapling in each plot

Data describing habitat use and availability for wild waterfowl in California, USA

These data describe the overlap of wild waterfowl and domestic poultry operations in California, USA. These data support a paired USGS publication.

Snag Fall Data from Long Term Forest Dynamics Plots in the Sierra Nevada of California through 2021

These snag (dead tree) fall data were collected as part of long term forest dynamics data. Tree fall data were collected non-systematically as text comments until 2013, after which explicit snag fall data were collected on an annual basis. This particular dataset includes data from 23 plots in old-growth mixed conifer and montane conifer forests in Sequoia-Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks.

Movements, Used Habitats, and Available Habitats Identified using Step Selection Processes for Four Species of Waterfowl in California's Central Valley, 2016-2022

Step selection functions use animal movement patterns to estimate habitats available at each step along a movement track. These data were generated from four species of waterfowl (Anser albifrons [greater white-fronted goose], Anser caerulescens caerulescens [lesser snow goose], Anas platyrhynchos [mallard], Anas acuta [northern pintail]) using the Central Valley of California 2016 to 2022 that we

Waterfowl GPS Observations in North America from 2015 to 2023 for Custom Wildlife Report Example for Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge

To effectively manage species and habitats at multiple scales, land managers require rapid information on wildlife use of managed areas and responses to landscape conditions and management actions. Global positioning system (GPS) tracking studies of wildlife are particularly informative to species ecology, habitat use, and conservation. Combining GPS data with administrative data, would more compr

Data Describing Site Characteristics Including Conifer Regeneration Following the 2018 Carr Fire in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

This dataset provides seedling density and site characteristics for 131 plots in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in California, USA. Site characteristics include modeled seed availability and terrain indices calculated using a 1 meter resolution digital elevation model (DEM).

Drainage Areas for Stream Segments in Western San Diego County

Drainage areas (or watersheds) were calculated for each stream segment in the National Hydrography Dataset High Resolution Plus Beta (NHD HR Plus Beta) using non-end junction points and the provided hydrologically enforced Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The DEM was used to create a flow direction raster. The pour points used were determined from junction points at each stream intersection excludin

Sediment deposition and accretion data from a tidal salt marsh in South San Francisco Bay, California 2021-2022

The U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center collected sediment and accretion data at a wave-exposed tidal salt marsh in South San Francisco Bay, California. Sediment traps and feldspar marker horizons (MH) were deployed along transects of increasing distance from the sediment source, at primary, secondary and tertiary marsh channels/bay. Data were collected bi-monthly over two m

Microsatellite Genetic Marker Genotypes from Southern Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus fuliginatus) Sampled in San Diego County, California

Collection of microsatellite genetic data from multiple projects involving southern mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus fuliginatus) in San Diego County, California. Samples were collected 2005-2007, 2010, 2012-2013, 2015, and 2018-2020. These data support the following publication: Mitelberg, A., Smith, J.G., and Vandergast, A.G., 2019, DNA Fingerprinting of Southern mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus fu

Capture Data and SNP Genotypes to Evaluate Subspecies Range Boundaries of the Bell’s vireo (Vireo bellii pusillus and V. b. arizonae) (2010-2022)

Genetic samples in the form of a small blood sample were collected from 263 Bell's vireos (Vireo bellii) in drainages throughout southern and central California, Arizona, southern Nevada, and southwestern Utah. We used population genomic techniques to delineate the range limit between the Least Bell's Vireo (V. b. pusillus) and its conspecific geographical neighbor, the Arizona Bell's Vireo (V. b
