Florida manatees: Perspectives on populations, pain, and protection
This overview has three related objectives. First, it provides simple documentation, descriptive summaries, and anecdotal accounts that demonstrate the extent to which maiming, and likely pain and suffering, occur in wild manatees as a result of strikes by boats. The chapter calls attention to the issues wounding raises for policy makers and managers involved with implementing boat speed zones, pa

Manatees in the Gulf of Mexico
The endangered Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) inhabits rivers and estuaries along both coasts of Florida and, to a lesser extent, adjacent states (Figure 1). Since 1990, documented sightings of manatees outside of Florida have been increasing. Besides the area providing critical habitat to various wildlife, breeding waterfowl, and migratory bi

Lead poisoning in the globally threatened marbled teal and white‐headed duck in Spain
Marbled teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris) and white‐headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) are the two European ducks threatened with global extinction. We investigated lead (Pb) poisoning in stifftails (Oxyura spp., n = 83) and marbled teal (n = 80) shot or found dead or moribund in Spanish wetlands via gizzard examination and liver, bone, and blood Pb analysis. Ingested Pb shot was present in 32% of
