The Geologic Collections Management System (GCMS) Determination Process provides important questions for consideration to aid in evaluating samples and collections for retention or for other uses.  The 4-Point Standard developed for the GCMS poses basic questions to collections managers evaluating their collections.  These questions serve as an aid in identifying the basic metadata and information needed to identify samples and collections. Figure 3, shown above, derived from the USGS Geologic Collections Management System Report, provides a graphical representation of the factors to be considered and the steps to be taken when evaluating a sample for retention or disposal by the U.S. Geological Survey.
