3DEP Product Metadata

Textual Metadata

3DEP products conform to the Federal Geographic Data Committee's content standard for digital geospatial metadata (http://www.fgdc.gov/metadata/csdgm/). Textual metadata is provided in XML format for each downloadable DEM product and source dataset. The XML files are readable in any standard web browser. The textual metadata is provided with the product bundles (.zip), which are downloadable through the following platforms:

Metadata Lineage Reporter

The Metadata Lineage Reporter web mapping application is designed to help the user find lidar source data for all 3DEP lidar-derived products: https://viewer.nationalmap.gov/theme/mlr/ 

Spatial Metadata

Metadata about the individual source datasets used to assemble the standard DEM layers is presented in a spatially-referenced polygonal footprint. The attributes of each source dataset, such as original spatial resolution, production method, and date entered into the standard DEM, are linked to this footprint. A list and description of these attributes for the 3DEP DEMs (previously known as the National Elevation Dataset) and source datasets can be found in the 3DEP Data Dictionary. Please note that the data dictionary has not been updated to new 3DEP product terminology; however, National Elevation Dataset (NED) references are directly applicable to the newly branded 3DEP seamless DEM layers.

Standard DEMs

*The spatial metadata for the 5-meter DEM is contained in the DEM source spatial metadata geopackage (FESM_OPR). To locate the 5-meter DEM in the spatial metadata, build an attribute query first using the attribute field pmethod to select all records with the numeric value of 10, and then query the results using the attribute field proj_name to select all records with text that starts with AK_IFSAR (all Alaska ifSAR projects start with AK_IFSAR).

Source Datasets

Source DEMs contains lidar-derived DEMs in the original projection and horizontal resolution in which they were delivered to the USGS. These DEMs are packaged and delivered by project. Horizontal resolution, coordinate systems, and data volume may vary from project to project.
