Project Descriptions

 

AK- Lidar Acquisition and Processing within the Ahtna (Alaska Native Corporation) Region and Various other Adjacent Areas of Interest in Interior Alaska 

This project is co-located with a major Alaskan watershed, river system, and transportation/transmission corridor. Ahtna Solutions, LLC (ASL) has collaborated with the Alaska-Alberta Railway Development Corporation (A2A); the Ahtna Intertribal Resource Commission (AITRC); Ahtna, Inc.'s Lands Department (AI); and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to assemble a lidar acquisition and processing project that identifies common and adjacent areas of shared interest, reducing project costs, and maximizing the benefit to the project partners and the USGS. Collectively, the results of this project will aid Ahtna and its partners in responsible development of water, minerals, and forestry resources. It will facilitate right-of-way administration and infrastructure management including pipeline, power transmission, rail, and highway corridors. It will assist native communities in the region with site planning and design in a manner that manages the region's cultural, historical, and natural resources. 

AZ – Pima Association of Governments 2021 Regional QL1 Acquisition 

Spanning 8,300mi² of land covering 8,500 ft of vertical relief from the Catalina Mountains in the east to the Barry M Goldewater Air Force Range in the west, this project establishes a QL1 dataset covering five major jurisdictions and two Tribal Nations in Pima County, the entirety of Saguaro National Park, the uncollected portions of the Santa Catalina Ranger District, and all other regions in Pima County which have not been previously acquired for 3DEP. The proposed extent also encompasses the remainder of the Lower Santa Cruz River Watershed in Pinal County and the remaining unacquired stretch of interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix.  Within the AOI are a total of 10 EPA level-4 ecoregions and all or part of 15 HUC-8 watersheds. 

AZ - Yavapai County Expanded QL1 Acquisition 

The Yavapai County Flood Control District in conjunction with the Arizona State Land Department will capture QL1 lidar data for the following HUC-8 watersheds within Yavapai County: Agua Fria, Hassayampa, Santa Maria, Burro, Big Sandy, Red Lake, Centennial Wash, and Bill Williams. This area includes areas overlapping and adjacent to USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service and Forest Service interests with the Arizona Verde River Area and the Arizona Kaibab National Forest projects. The lidar collected will support analysis and monitoring for flood control district floodplain mapping with FEMA as well as land analysis for Arizona State Land parcels that may be developed in the future. The data will improve hydrological modeling and flood risk prior to development in the area so that development can occur with flood hazard consideration. The data can also be utilized for potential post-fire flood mitigation consideration. 

CA - Alameda County QL1/QL0 Lidar Project  

Alameda County is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, totaling an area of approximately 820 square miles. Flood protection of 10 active flood zones is managed through the Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. The District is divided into two Agencies: Zone 7 Water Agency (Zone 7) in the east and Alameda County Public Works Agency (ACPWA) in the west. Together, the two Agencies are looking to improve their modeling capabilities by obtaining a mix of high definition QL1/QL0 lidar to help with hydraulic modeling efforts for floodplain mapping, Capital Improvement Project planning, and assessing condition of existing facilities. The higher resolution data will provide the Agencies with the accuracy necessary to make informed decisions in a cost-effective manner. 

CA - High Quality Lidar for the California San Joaquin Valley Floor  

This project will acquire QL1 quality lidar data over more than 11,500 sq mi of the CA San Joaquin Valley floor. Except for small patches, most of the acquisition area has no 3DEP lidar data available. The acquired data will support initiatives across state, Federal, local, and non-governmental stakeholders. The data will be valuable for developing detailed analyses of surface topography and for hydrologic mapping, including of fine scale drainage patterns such as the agricultural landscapes across the valley. Information derived from the data will improve understanding of the landscape’s characteristics including surficial geology and soils mapping with direct applicability to groundwater recharge and geologic and flooding hazards. Additional uses cases include providing baseline data to support analyses of land subsidence and uplift, transportation and water conveyance infrastructure, agricultural production, and human structures. 

KY - KyFromAbove 2021 Lidar Acquisition 

The 2021 KyFromAbove acquisition effort will re-acquire lidar data for counties that were previously collected during the 2010 - 2013 timeframe. Reacquisition of data for this area will ensure that it meets current QL2 specifications. The data will be leveraged by the KY Division of Water, NRCS, and the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources to improve analysis, design, and research conducted within the AOI's. All collected data will be shared across state government and in the public domain where it brings value to a wide array of business processes. 

MA - Elevation Mapping for Eastern and Central Massachusetts 

The Elevation Mapping for Eastern and Central Massachusetts project will acquire QL1 lidar data for 5,230 square miles. This project completes 3DEP quality mapping for Massachusetts, including the Boston and Worcester metropolitan areas. USGS funding leveraged state funding needed for the cost difference between QL2 and QL1 data. 

ME - Maine Mid-Coast Lidar  

The Maine GeoLibrary and Maine Office of GIS have assembled a diverse team of partners working towards the same goal of acquiring tidally coordinated lidar data at USGS QL2 specifications. The Maine Mid-Coast lidar project will acquire a total of 2,030 square miles and provide a complete set of USGS QL2 accuracy data with tidal coordination.  

MN - Southern Minnesota (Le Sueur County, and the SE and Missouri River Lidar Acquisition Blocks) 

The Southern lidar acquisition area is the second phase of the multi-year effort of the Minnesota lidar plan. These two regions of the state have experienced significant natural and anthropogenic changes that are not reflected in existing low density lidar data, including impacts from floods, terrestrial invasive species, and urban development. This landscape is predominantly agricultural, and many localized efforts have been made to improve surface and ground water quality through protection, restoration, and improvement projects.  This project has many vested partners who understand the return on investment for high density lidar, with value to agricultural and water quality management in Minnesota. In addition, the very high density lidar investments being made in the project area will improve our understanding of cost savings for key asset management activities that typically require mobile solutions. 

MN - Lake Superior Lidar Acquisition Block 

The Lake Superior Lidar Acquisition Block (LAB) is the second phase of the Northeast Forested Lidar Acquisition Area (LAA). This area has experienced significant natural and anthropogenic changes that are not reflected in existing low density lidar data, including impacts from floods, tree blowdown, fire, invasive species, mining, erosion, and rural and urban development. This landscape is predominantly complex-upland and lowland forest ecosystems interspersed with glacial lakes and expansive wetlands. The LAB also contains Lake Superior shoreline, the City of Duluth, and the St. Louis River Estuary. This project has many partners who understand the return on investment of high density lidar, particularly related to natural resource management. Numerous stakeholders are eager to make immediate use of updated high density lidar in their risk mitigation strategies for the rapidly changing shoreline of Lake Superior. 

MT- Montana Statewide Lidar Acquisition Plan - Phase 3 

Lidar acquisitions in Montana are coordinated through the Montana Elevation Working Group and guided by the Montana Lidar Plan. For this project, Federal, State, and Tribal agencies are partnering with 3DEP to build upon recently collected and in-work lidar acquisitions (2020-2021), with an objective of attaining expansive county-wide and regional consistency across the northwest and north-central regions of the state. Multiple counties and several Indian reservations will be collected. Lidar-derived products are needed for high-hazard dam assessment, forest inventory, fuels and forest resiliency, geologic hazard mapping, conservation planning, archaeological survey, and modeling slope mass-wasting. 

OH - Ohio Statewide 3D Elevation Program - Phase 3 

The Ohio Statewide 3DEP Acquisition 2019-2021 project is a multi-year project to acquire QL1 lidar for the 41,276 square miles of terrestrial lidar for the entire state of Ohio. The project addresses several mission-critical functions identified in the National Enhanced Elevation Assessment supporting the efforts of the contributing partners to study and develop programs for natural resource conservation; agriculture and precision farming; flood risk management planning and response; water supply and quality; wildlife management; and river and stream resource management. The data developed and the information derived from this project will have far reaching benefits beyond those identified by the contributing partners. 

OR - FY21 Fremont-Winema and Malheur National Forests, Oregon QL1 

The project areas on the Fremont-Winema and Malheur National Forests are characterized by rounded mountain slopes transitioning to more rugged, steeply sloped terrain with elevations up to 7,500-ft above mean sea level. Land cover varies with herbaceous, shrub, and predominantly forest communities. The geospatial information gained from light detection and ranging (lidar) is changing the way land management agencies and partners understand dynamic processes and manage the landscape. It is improving decision-making and land management practices by furthering the understanding of hydrology, geologic processes, climate, tree canopy structure, forest restoration, roads and infrastructure, and general morphology. 

OR - McKenzie River 2021 

Lane Council of Governments (LCOG) requests USGS 3DEP funding for a lidar data acquisition project called McKenzie River 3DEP 2021 to collect 619 square miles of Quality Level 1 (QL1) lidar in the summer of 2021. The McKenzie River 3DEP 2021 lidar proposal was developed partially as a response to the Holiday wildfire that impacted the communities along the McKenzie river in Lane and Linn counties of Oregon. High quality, high density lidar collected in 2021, one year after a devastating wildfire, will be extremely valuable to local, regional, and state agencies managing the ecological devastation of the wildfire. The lidar data produced from this project will be the basis for derivative elevation products, forestry analytical services and improved hydrologic understanding of the region. Post-Fire hazard mitigation for this region of Oregon will benefit from new QL1 lidar produced through the USGS 3DEP. 

WA - Washington North and Central Counties QL1 Lidar Project  

The goals of the WA North and Central Washington Counties QL1 lidar Project are to collect lidar over areas without coverage and update deficient coverage in order to provide consistent, high-quality, accurate topographic information across the region. This data will support several critical applications, including wildfire mitigation and forest health, water conservation, irrigation engineering, flood planning, identification of geologic hazards, wildlife management and emergency management. This project is part of a multi-year lidar plan that aims at developing a consistent, accurate, statewide baseline topographic dataset that can support all users and applications across the state.  

WA - King County Washington Spring 2021 QL1 Lidar Project 

The King County Washington Spring 2021 QL1 lidar Project aims to refresh outdated coverage and provide a temporally consistent baseline lidar map to support decision making and analysis work across the region. The lidar data and derivative products will be immediately used for orthophoto generation, development of 3D building footprints, urban forestry health monitoring, salmon and wildlife restoration work, landslide and natural hazard inventory, and forestry management efforts. Additionally, this campaign aligns with other recently completed or ongoing collection projects in the region and fills a gap in updated lidar coverage for Western Washington. 

WA - Thurston County Washington Spring 2021 QL1 Lidar Project 

The Thurston County Washington Spring 2021 QL1 lidar Project will complete countywide QL1 coverage and refresh outdated coverage. The lidar data and derivative products will be used in support of forestry management on state-owned trust lands as well as landslide inventory and hazard analysis. At the county level this data will support emergency management flood control, the development of building footprints, identification of stream channel locations, understanding channel migration and erosion patterns, change detection, canopy height, and wildfire hazard analyses. This collection would also contribute to stormwater impervious surface area analyses, wetlands and habitat enhancement projects, enable endangered species studies, facilitate planning and zoning updates, advanced hydrologic modeling (2D/3D), and law enforcement line-of-sight products. This collection would align with other recent 3DEP projects in the region and fill gaps in state and national coverage. 

WI - 2021 Wisconsin Statewide Lidar Data Collection 

The Wisconsin Land Information Program (WLIP) in partnership with 3DEP will continue its goal to complete QL2 lidar statewide. In 2021, QL2 lidar data for eight Wisconsin counties will be collected by USGS through a GPSC acquisition. The project area directly overlaps with NOAA, NRCS, USGS priority areas for data collection and supports local data needs by the DOT, DNR, Tribal and county governments, private business and more. The 2021 round of data collections will update many areas of the state with the oldest elevation data and cover several areas with recent significant flooding. Local contributing partners include Crawford, Juneau, Kewaunee, Marinette, Marathon, Pierce, Richland, and St. Croix counties.
