How much does it cost to use the lidar Requester Pays option?

All of the USGS lidar data holdings are freely available through the FTP service located at: ftp://rockyftp.cr.usgs.gov/vdelivery/Datasets/Staged/Elevation/LPC/Projects/. However, download speeds are limited by the infrastructure and can become bottlenecked with heavy usage.

The lidar Requester Pays option is ideal for quickly accessing very large amounts of data, and is provided for users who want the reliability and performance of the Amazon cloud infrastructure and would like to pay for an upgrade to use this optimal service. All costs are billed directly by Amazon. The service requires an Amazon AWS account which can be created for free at https://aws.amazon.com/free/.

There are two costs related to accessing data in a Amazon S3 Requester Pays bucket.

  • Request costs

    • PUT, COPY, POST, or LIST: $0.005 per 1,000 requests

    • GET and all other Requests: $0.004 per 10,000 requests

  • Transfer costs

    • $0.020 per GB for transfers to another region other than US West (Oregon).

    • $0.090 per GB for transfers (downloads) out of Amazon.

    • There are no transfer costs when data stays within the US West (Oregon) region.

Prices are subject to change by Amazon so users should check the latest pricing information available from Amazon at: https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/.
