The sign at the entry to USFWS Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge

Detailed Description

The sign at the entry to the US Fish and Wildlife Service Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is in the Sonoran Desert on the Arizona and Mexico border, and much of it is designated wilderness area. The USGS Southwest Biological Science worked on a project in collaboration with USFWS to survey bedrock water catchments, called tinajas, in order to provide the USFWS with accurate water volume information that they can use to monitor water in the tanks and deliver water when necessary. This enables the USFWS to meet their management objective to sustain a healthy population of 500-700 desert bighorn sheep in the refuge. Photo by Josh Caster, USGS.
