Research Drilling Program
Research or exploratory drilling is the process of drilling wells or boreholes to obtain geological information through core samples about a potential groundwater, mineral, or oil resources in a particular area. It is typically conducted in areas where the geology suggests the presence of valuable resources, but where the extent and quality of those resources are uncertain.
Purpose & Overview
The primary goal of exploratory drilling is to gather data which is then provided to cooperators so they can assess the feasibility and economic viability of extracting the resources. This process involves drilling test wells, collecting core samples, and analyzing geological formations to determine the presence, quantity, and quality of the targeted resources.
Geographic Reach
Administratively housed in the California Water Science Center, the USGS Research Drilling Program is headquartered in Las Vegas, with additional satellite offices located in Denver, Colorado and Reston, Virginia. We are prepared to assist scientists across the entirety of the United States, offering support for projects spanning diverse geographic and geological terrains.
Equipment & Expertise
We are equipped with cutting-edge technology and led by expert geologists. Our equipment, capable of handling a range of geological formations, includes advanced drilling rigs, geophysical logging tools, and specialized pumps. Our geologists lead teams to bring in-depth knowledge and innovative techniques, ensuring precision and efficiency in every drilling project.
