Land Change Monitoring, Assessment, and Projection

LCMAP Sample Products

The USGS LCMAP is the foundation for an integrated land change science framework. This new generation of land change and land cover data are provided to the science community as a suite of products. The products are developed from 30-m Landsat TM, ETM+, and OLI for the years 1985 to 2017. The provisional product suite includes five land cover products and five spectral change products.

The USGS has developed research-quality, applications-ready, LCMAP Science Products that will soon be available for download from EarthExplorer. The LCMAP products are delivered in U.S. Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) tile format defined in the Albers Equal Area Conic map projection referenced to the WGS84 datum. The products represent specific land cover and spectral change products derived from time-series data, developed in part using the USGS implementation of the Continuous Change Detection and Classification (CCDC) algorithm developed by Zhu and Woodcock (2014).

The products include ten land cover and land change geospatial datasets, among them primary and secondary land cover classes with associated model confidence, annual land cover change, time of spectral change, change magnitude, and spectral stability period. Development of these products uses measurements collected from the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), and Operational Land Imager (OLI)/Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) instruments from 1982 to present. This 36+ year record at 30-meter spatial resolution allows for the study of natural and human-induced changes to the Earth’s land surface.

The first version of LCMAP data for the conterminous United States will be released in early 2020.

The following sample LCMAP Land Cover Products are available for the U.S. Landsat ARD tile h003v010 in southern California, with annual data for the years 1985 to 2017.

Sample LCMAP Science Product Suite
