Fissure 8 lava channel creates a stark divide in the Puna landscape
Detailed Description
A morning overflight photograph shows the dramatic difference between the southern and northern margins of the fissure 8 lava channel. The dominant trade-wind direction blows heat and volcanic gases to the southwest, leaving a parched landscape where lush green once was. The northern areas of the channel and fissure remain more verdant. The fissure 8 cone is hidden behind a cloud of steam in the top center of the photograph.
