HVO scientist photographs new Kīlauea summit eruption—October 1, 2021

A Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) scientist takes photos of the Kīlauea summit eruption, within Halema‘uma‘u crater, during today’s helicopter overflight. In addition to making eruption observations and taking photos and videos to share with the public, scientists also collect consecutive and overlapping visual and thermal images to make eruption models and thermal maps.
