Maintaining monitoring station in crater of Mount St. Helens.

Detailed Description

Snow, ice, wind and low temperatures present an obstacle to maintaining remote monitoring stations at Mount St. Helens, particularly in the crater. The location for this station was chosen because the ground temperature is generally about 50ºC under the snow (about 122ºF) and nearby steam vents keep the area warm enough to minimize the build-up of snow and ice on station equipment.
