Mount St. Helens still erupting as anniv. approaches
Detailed Description
Mount St. Helens crater and dome, as seen from the northwest. The old dome is in the lower left; the new dome erupted since early October 2004 is at the upper right. Detailed analysis of aerial photographs taken this summer shows that lava was being added to the dome at about 130,000 cubic meters (170,000 yards) per day between May and June 2005. By comparison, last week Kīlauea erupted about 400,000 cubic meters (523,000 cubic yards) of lava per day. August 10, 2005; U.S. Geological Survey; Seth Moran.
