Old bombs found on Mauna Loa: The rest of the story (Part 1)
Detailed Description
This "pointer bomb," dropped on the 1935 Mauna Loa Humu`ula lava flow, was found and photographed in 1939 during Thomas Jaggar's post-eruption inspection of the flow, and again in 1977 by now-retired USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Jack Lockwood. This same bomb was recently rediscovered and featured in Hawai‘i media reports. USGS photo by J. Lockwood, 1977.
