Piscataquis River Ice Measurement

Image: Piscataquis River Ice Measurement

Detailed Description

In this photo Terrence Talbot, a student with the Maine Office, drills holes with an ice auger in preparation for a discharge measurement through the ice at the USGS station on the Piscataquis River near Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.

After drilling 20-30 holes through the ice at known intervals we are able to measure the depth and velocity at each location, allowing us to compute discharge through the cross section.
