Detailed Description

Looking up the Chaitén River (Chile) to the steaming new lava dome in the Chaitén caldera. Sediments in the foreground are mainly ash and pumice washed down from hillsides, and reflect the peak riverbed level following the explosive phase of the eruption in 2008. The terrace height is about 5 ft (1.5 m).
