On December 9, 2017, USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center in Santa Cruz, California set up displays and demonstrations for the public at an Open House event. Here, USGS geologist Amy East (right), with oceanographer Shawn Harrison (to left of Amy) and his wife (at far left) looking on, works with Shawn's daughters to demonstrate how the USGS might shake sand through a series of sieves to study the composition of a sand sample.
