Detailed Description

A rainy view from the western rim of Halema‘uma‘u, at Kīlauea summit, on Thursday, April 29, 2021. Field crews observed a small and weak whirlwind (center) form over the eastern crusted surface of the lava lake around 3:00 p.m. HST. It only lasted for a minute before dissipating. USGS photo by C.
