Landsat satellites captured vivid imagery of the massive fires blazing across Canada earlier this year: orange flames, ugly burn scars, thick smoke.

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center was ready to share relevant images and data as quickly as possible to agencies responding to the fires.

USGS EROS Celebrates 50 Years of a Mission that Matters

Fifty years ago, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) brought people together to work in a new government facility surrounded by South Dakota farm fields. The mission: act as stewards for land remote sensing imagery, especially the scenes collected by the fledgling Landsat satellite, and help people around the world make sense of it to benefit themselves and the planet.

We’ve identified one last structure in New Mexico of which there are quite a few no-edit-history points – ambulance services! These are one of the more difficult structures to verify since ambulance services tend to come and go fairly often and can be challenging to research, but we know the TNMCorps volunteers are up to the task!

Moon Intrusion Forces Reprocessing of Landsat 9, Landsat 8 Scenes

The USGS/NASA Landsat Calibration and Validation Team (CVT) has recently identified additional Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 scenes that were impacted by the presence of the Moon in the calibration data.

Thirty-seven Landsat 9 and 342 Landsat 8 Level-1 scenes were reprocessed on July 17 and July 18, 2023.

The USGS provides maps and imagery for hurricane response
