This video captures both the resident and anadromous forms of (Oncorhyncus mykiss) Rainbow Trout in a small tributary in the upper Cowlitz River Basin, Washington during spawning season. The male Rainbow Trout exhibits a courting behavior as it quivers against the side of the larger female (HOR) hatchery origin steelhead.

Scientists from the USGS Western Ecological Research Center (WERC) are conducting a "social attraction" study for seabirds in the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Historically, this region offered wetland habitats to local wildlife. With the introduction of industrial salt ponds and human development, however, much of this habitat was lost.

The USGS field tested the use of a portable hand-held kit for the detection of the environmental DNA (eDNA) of Asian carps (bighead carp and silver carp) in water samples as part of on-going invasive species detection research. The goals of the USGS-led research are to develop a method and kit that can be used on-site to detect Asian carp eDNA within one hour.
