Bipartisan Infrastructure Law: Ecosystem Restoration Activity 9
Activity Description: Establish and implement a national revegetation effort on Federal and non-Federal land, including to implement the National Seed Strategy (NSS) for Rehabilitation and Restoration. The USGS will provide science to support:
- The Optimizing Resilience and Adaptation for Restored Native Seedings in Sagebrush Steppe project that will evaluate how natural and management factors affect the recovery of post-fire seedings in sagebrush steppe, focusing on informing key decisions such as treatment prioritization, seed selection, and resumption of post-fire grazing. Expected outcomes include science information products and science delivery to managers of burned areas, including presentations, decision support tools (content and modules added to the USGS/BLM Land Treatment Digital Library – Land Treatment Exploration Tool), data releases, and publications. This project is a partnership between USGS, BLM, and FWS, and contributes to the National Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation and Burned Area Response program guidance, and the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) Sagebrush Conservation Strategy.
- The “Using Pollinator eDNA to Assess Ecological Resilience of Restored Grasslands” project will develop, test, and establish protocols for using pollinator environmental DNA (eDNA) to assess the success of grassland restoration and improve our understanding of the functioning and ecological resilience of America’s grasslands. This work focuses on developing novel, non-invasive methods for assessing plant-pollinator interactions and building a foundation of information about pollinator diversity in America’s grasslands. This project is a partnership with USGS, BLM, NPS, and FWS.
Sagebrush Keystone Initiative
Encompassing over 175 million acres, America’s “Sagebrush Sea” is the largest terrestrial ecosystem in the lower 48 states.
