Phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations remained relatively stable from 1993 to 2003 in about half of the streams assessed nationwide by USGS. The pattern did vary in some regions, including increases in phosphorus in more than half of the streams assessed in the Mississippi/Atchafalaya River Basin.

The entire listed range of the federally threatened Mojave population of desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is covered by this habitat model.

The U.S. Geological Survey has updated its assessment of in-place oil shale resources in the Piceance Basin in western Colorado.
Development of oil shale has significant technological and environmental challenges and no economic extraction method is currently available in the U.S. Therefore it is unknown how much of the assessed in-place (total amount present) resource is recoverable.
