Nene O Moloka‘i is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation created to establish and preserve wild nene on the island of Moloka‘i, while emphasizing education through community involvement. Founded in 1994, Nene O Moloka‘i is the first non-profit in Hawai‘i authorized by the State of Hawai‘i, Division of Forestry & Wildlife to breed and release nene. Although the 10-year-long agreement with the state has expired, Nene O Moloka‘i continues to maintain a small flock of nene for educational purposes, and has expanded its focus to increase awareness about Hawai‘i's other four endangered waterbirds - Hawaiian Coot (‘alae ‘ke‘oke‘o), Hawaiian Moorhen (‘alae ‘ula), Hawaiian Duck (koloa maoli), and Hawaiian Stilt (ae‘o). Nene O Moloka‘i is operated by volunteers and is funded through private donations, and foundation and corporate grants.
