Science Datasets

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Surface water area data for isolated stock ponds in southern Arizona, USA and northern Sonora, Mexico

These data were compiled to compare the ability of matched filtering (MF) and linear spectral mixture analysis (LSMA) to map isolated wetland sites using Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) data. We analyzed 81 stock ponds corresponding to a 2007 Landsat 5 image and 73 sites corresponding to a 2014 Landsat 8 image in southern Arizona and northern Sonora,...

Waterborne Resistivity Inverted Models, Mississippi Alluvial Plain, 2016-2018

This data release consists of two .csv files of inverted models of electrical resistivity created from the processed resistivity data in the accompanying two data releases: (Miller and Others, 2018) and (2018 Raw and Processed, in progress). During 2016, 17, and 18, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted continuous resistivity profiling along 15 rivers or lakes in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain...

Common murres collected in Alaska from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2016 and shipped to USGS National Wildlife Health Center for cause of death determination

About 62,000 dead or dying common murres (Uria aalge), the trophically dominant fish-eating seabird of the North Pacific, washed ashore between summer 2015 and spring 2016 on beaches from California to Alaska. Most birds were severely emaciated and, so far, no evidence for anything other than starvation was found to explain this mass mortality. Three-quarters of murres were found in the Gulf...

Wolf Hematology in the Superior National Forest, 1989-1993

Hematology and body mass were studied in nine female and five male free-ranging wolves in the Superior National Forest handled 4-17 times during 1989-1993. The dataset includes the following data for each wolf studied: wolf identifier, dates caught, sex, age, body mass in kg, adjusted body mass in kg, and values of hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cells (RBC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH),...

Conserving Minnesota’s native mussel legacy: Quantifying habitat interactions

The goal of this project was to quantify the background physiological condition of mussels in the Minnesota and St. Croix River basins using glycogen as an indicator of physiological stress. We obtained 230 samples of foot tissue from Lampsilis cardium (n=118) and Lasmigona complanata (n=112) from a total of four rivers during September 1-5, 2015. From each sample, we weighed out a 10.0 &#...

Optimum electrofishing waveforms and parameters to induce immobilization of juvenile Grass Carp: Data

Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) are a non-native species to North America that were first introduced for vegetation control in the 1960s. However, wild-reproducing Grass Carp can negatively impact aquatic habitats and aquatic communities by consuming substantial amounts of aquatic vegetation and increasing turbidity. Numerous fisheries techniques have been used in an attempt to control...
