Science Datasets

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Hourly computed potential evapotranspiration in thousandths of an inch., January 1, 1948 - September 30, 2015

The text file PET.txt contains hourly data from January 1, 1948, to September 30, 2015. This data is computed from average daily air temperature, average daily dewpoint temperature, daily unadjusted wind speed, and daily solar radiation using the Fortran program LXPET. This program is documented in detail in Murphy (2005). Reference Cited: Murphy, E.A., 2005, Comparison of potential...

Periphyton (1993-2011) and Water Quality (2014) Data for ET&C Article Entitled Spatial and Temporal Variation in Microcystins Occurrence in Wadeable Streams in the Southeastern USA

Spatial reconnaissance of fluvial microcystins (MC) concentrations and select water-quality parameters, including nutrients and periphyton biomass, in 75 wadeable streams in the Piedmont region of the southeastern USA during 2014. Data set includes only those data specifically discussed in the associated journal article: Loftin, K.A., Clark, J.M., Journey, C.A., Kolpin, D.W., Van Metre, P.C.,...

Wastewater Treatment Plant Total Phosphorus Flux Load Estimates Red River of the North Basin

The dataset contains estimates for total phosphorus flux from wastewater treatment plants that discharge to surface water within the Red River of the North Basin in the United States and subbasins. Shapefiles defining the subbasins are available as part of the same data release in which these data are published. Estimates of wastewater treatment plant total phosphorus flux (or load) were...

Digital image mosaic of the nearshore coastal waters of Kawela on the island of Moloka'i generated using aerial photographs and SHOALS airborne lidar bathymetry data

This portion of the data release contains a digital image mosaic with 1 meter-per-pixel resolution of the Kawela area on the south coast of Moloka'i. This image mosaic was generated using digitized 1:35K natural color photographs collected in September 1993 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Ocean Service (NOS). Also available is a lower-resolution 'browse'...

Sediment-quality and water-toxicity data from 10 sites on the Westside creeks and San Antonio River, San Antonio, Texas, 2014

Sediment samples and samples for water-toxicity testing were collected during 2014 from several streams in San Antonio, Texas known locally as the Westside creeks (Alazán, Apache, Martínez, and San Pedro Creeks) and from the San Antonio River. Samples were collected once during base-flow and again after periods of storm-water runoff (post-storm conditions) to determine...

Adult Aquatic Insects that Emerged from Mesocosms Exposed to Bifenthrin

Direct and indirect ecological effects of the widely used insecticide bifenthrin on stream ecosystems are largely unknown. To investigate such effects, a manipulative experiment was conducted in stream mesocosms that were colonized by aquatic insect communities and exposed to bifenthrin-contaminated sediment; implications for natural streams were interpreted through comparison of mesocosm...

Magnetotelluric data, Southern San Luis Valley, Colorado, 2006: Station 8

This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 2006 in the Southern San Luis Valley, Colorado. The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a series of multidisciplinary studies, including MT surveys, in the San Luis Valley to improve understanding of the hydrogeology of the Santa Fe Group and the nature of the sedimentary deposits comprising the principal groundwater...

Barometric pressure time series from August 15, 2011, to October 11, 2011, from the wellhouse for Floridan aquifer system monitoring well FA-4 at the North District Wastewater Treatment Plant, Miami-Dade County, Florida

U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Miami-Dade County, performed a sequential, aquifer stress test from August 15 to October 12, 2011, on the Floridan aquifer system at the North District Wastewater Treatment Plant, in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Miami-Dade County stressed the Floridan aquifer system with four municipal injection wells at the North District. The U.S. Geological Survey...

Spatial distribution of depth-averaged velocity measured in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Chicago, IL (December 7, 2010)

These data were collected using a 1200 kHz TRDI Rio Grande acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in mode 12 with 25 centimeter bins from a moving boat. The data were georeferenced with a Hemisphere Crescent A100 differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver with submeter accuracy. The data have been depth-averaged over the entire measured portion of the water column and temporally...

Sidescan Sonar point shapefile and ASCII navigation files collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Madison Swanson and Steamboat Lumps Marine Protected Areas, Gulf of Mexico in 2000 (Geographic, WGS 84)

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mapped approximately 22 square miles of the Madison Swanson Marine Protected Area (MPA) and Steamboat Lumps MPA, which are located on the Florida shelf edge in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico in 2000 using sidescan sonar and high-resolution chirp seismic-reflection systems. This survey was conducted as part of a larger study of the effectiveness of no-fishing...
