Science Datasets

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Total Mercury Concentrations in Fish Muscle from the Colorado River and Bright Angel Creek, AZ, USA (2015)

Mercury is a globally distributed pollutant that threatens human and ecosystem health. Even protected areas, such as national parks, are subjected to mercury contamination because it is delivered via atmospheric deposition, often after long-range transport. In aquatic ecosystems, certain environmental conditions can promote microbial processes that convert inorganic mercury to an organic form...

Water-level, wind-wave, velocity, and suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) time-series data from Little Holland Tract (station HVB), Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California, 2015-2017

Water depth, turbidity, and current velocity time-series data were collected in Little Holland Tract from 2015 to 2017. Depth (from pressure) and velocity were measured in high-frequency (8 Hz) bursts. Burst means represent tidal stage and currents, and burst data can be used to determine wave height, period, direction, and wave-orbital velocity. The turbidity sensors were calibrated to...

Georeferenced TIFF image displaying 1 meter resolution backscatter data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Steamboat Lumps Marine Protected Area, Gulf of Mexico in 2000 (UTM Zone 16N, WGS 84, GeoTIFF image)

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mapped approximately 22 square miles of the Madison Swanson Marine Protected Area (MPA) and Steamboat Lumps MPA, which are located on the Florida shelf edge in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico in 2000 using sidescan sonar and high-resolution chirp seismic-reflection systems. This survey was conducted as part of a larger study of the effectiveness of no-fishing...

Map 09: ArcGIS layer showing contours of the 50 percentile of water levels from all months during the 2000-2009 water years (feet)

Statistical analyses and maps representing mean, high, and low water-level conditions in the surface water and groundwater of Miami-Dade County were made by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Miami-Dade County Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, to help inform decisions necessary for urban planning and development. Sixteen maps were created that show contours of...

Photographs from the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia (Buena Vista region)

This dataset contains photographs keyed to station points along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. Photographs are titled and arranged by 7.5-minute quadrangle, and station points are located in the "Detailed geologic mapping geodatabase for the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia." The first part of the photograph's filename corresponds to the FieldID attribute of the PhotoPoints entity in the...

Acoustic Doppler current profiler velocity data collected in the approach channel of Brandon Road Lock and Dam in 2015

Water velocities were measured in the Des Plaines River from approximately river mile 286 to river mile 284 on October 19–21, 2015 using Teledyne Rio Grande 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with differential GPS receivers with submeter accuracy. These velocity data were collected in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes...

Tomography pressure time series from August 15, 2011, to October 12, 2011, for injection well IW-1 at the North District Wastewater Treatment Plant, Miami-Dade County, Florida

U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Miami-Dade County, performed a sequential, aquifer stress test from August 15 to October 12, 2011, on the Floridan aquifer system at the North District Wastewater Treatment Plant, in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Miami-Dade County stressed the Floridan aquifer system with four municipal injection wells at the North District. The U.S. Geological Survey...

Nearshore bathymetry data from the Elwha River delta, Washington, July 2015, collected from personal watercraft

This part of the data release presents bathymetry data from the Elwha River delta collected in July 2015 using two personal watercraft (PWCs). The PWCs were equipped with single-beam echosounders and survey-grade global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) receivers.

Hurricane Sandy 2013 National Wetlands Inventory Habitat Classification (Habitat Analysis of Coastal Federal Lands located within High Impact Zones of Hurricane Sandy, October 2012)

Hurricane Sandy directly hit the Atlantic shoreline of New Jersey during several astronomical high tide cycles in late October, 2012. The eastern seaboard areas are subject to sea level rise and increased severity and frequency of storm events, prompting habitat and land use planning changes. Wetland Aquatic Research Center (WARC) has conducted detailed mapping of marine and estuarine...

Gust Erosion Chamber Data, Yolo Bypass, CA (2015-16)

A Gust erosion chamber was used to apply horizontal shear stress to sediment cores obtained at selected locations within the Yolo Bypass near Sacramento, California. The locations correspond to different land uses; two cores were taken at each site. The shear stress was increased in stepwise fashion, and turbidity of the effluent monitored. From this, two quantities are calculated: 1) critical...
