Science Datasets

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

PNG formatted images of EdgeTech SB-512i chirp seismic-reflection data collected in 2015 by the U.S. Geological Survey along the Delmarva Peninsula, MD and VA.

The Delmarva Peninsula is a 220-kilometer-long headland, spit, and barrier island complex that was significantly affected by Hurricane Sandy in the fall of 2012. The U.S. Geological Survey conducted cruises during the summers of 2014 and 2015 to map the inner continental shelf of the Delmarva Peninsula using geophysical and sampling techniques to define the geologic framework that governs...

Particulate Matter Identification in Lung Tissue from Deployers, Positive, and Negative controls Using Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (2013-2016)

We developed and tested a new method for in situ characterization and distribution of inorganic particles in biopsied lung tissue from three diverse human subject groups using field emission scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive analyzer. Backscattered electron and secondary electron images of particulate matter in lung tissue were acquired. Inorganic particulate matter in the...

Acquisition logs maintained on U.S. Geological Survey Field Activity 2000-005-FA in the Gulf of Mexico in 2000 (PDF and Excel spreadsheet formats)

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mapped approximately 22 square miles of the Madison Swanson Marine Protected Area (MPA) and Steamboat Lumps MPA, which are located on the Florida shelf edge in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico in 2000 using sidescan sonar and high-resolution chirp seismic-reflection systems. This survey was conducted as part of a larger study of the effectiveness of no-fishing...

Data validating computation of boundary roughness from QL2 lidar derived digital elevation models for 2D hydraulic modeling applications--Pyhton Script and Toolbox

Calibration of hydraulic models require careful selection of input parameters to provide the best possible modeling outcome. Currently the selection of hydraulic resistance or 'n' values for these models is a subjective process potentially exposing models to critical review . A process is needed to objectively estimate n-values so everyone responsible for model calibration arrives at the...

Groundwater discharge area for Diamond Valley, Central Nevada, 1968

This dataset represents "phreatophyte areas" mapped as part of an analysis of irrigation pumping
in Diamond Valley, Nevada published in 1968. The data were digitized for comparison with mapping
of groundwater discharge areas done in 2011 as part of a groundwater study in these valleys published
in 2016.

Data in support of manuscript "Evaluation of Chemical Control for Invasive Crayfish at a Warmwater Fish Production Hatchery"

Invasive crayfish are known to displace native crayfish species, alter aquatic habitat and community structure and function, and are serious pests for fish hatcheries. White River Crawfish (WRC; Procambarus acutus) were inadvertently introduced to a warm-water fish hatchery in Missouri, USA, possibly in an incoming fish shipment. We evaluated the use of chemical control for crayfish to...

Digital image mosaic of the nearshore coastal waters of Wai'alae on the island of O'ahu generated using aerial photographs and SHOALS airborne lidar bathymetry data

This portion of the data release contains a digital image mosaic with 1.0 foot-per-pixel (0.3048 meter-per-pixel) resolution of the Wai'alae area on the southeast coast of O'ahu. This image mosaic was generated using digitized 1:10K natural color photographs collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Ocean Service. Also available is a lower-resolution '...

Final Bulk Sediment Concentrations of Bifenthrin from Mesocosms

Direct and indirect ecological effects of the widely used insecticide bifenthrin on stream ecosystems are largely unknown. To investigate such effects, a manipulative experiment was conducted in stream mesocosms that were colonized by aquatic insect communities and exposed to bifenthrin-contaminated sediment; implications for natural streams were interpreted through comparison of mesocosm...
