Mapping, Remote Sensing, and Geospatial Data
The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Data are available for download Nationally, by Region, LCC, or State/Territory boundary. Select your desired file type — either ESRI ArcGIS 10 Geodatabase or Shapefile. KMZ files are also available.
Gap Analysis Project (GAP) habitat maps are predictions of the spatial distribution of suitable environmental and land cover conditions within the United States for individual species. Mapped areas represent places where the environment is suitable for the species to occur (i.e. suitable to support one or more life history requirements for breeding, resting, or foraging), while areas ...
GAP species range data are coarse representations of the total areal extent a species occupies, in other words the geographic limits within which a species can be found (Morrison and Hall 2002). These data provide the geographic extent within which the USGS Gap Analysis Project delineates areas of suitable habitat for terrestrial vertebrate species in their species habitat maps.
For inclusion into PAD-US, data submissions must meet the following requirements:
- Areas meet the PAD-US definition of a protected area
- Basic attributes for each protected area are included
- Polygons (areas), not lines
Species habitat maps are available in an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Service (WMS). Each species’ habitat map or range map is a layer in the respective WMS, referenced by the species' common name (scientific name) species code and version. At this time all maps are version 1 (v1).
