The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Water-use data available from USGS

The U.S. Geological Survey compiles water-use estimates every five years for each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Archived datasets underlying the published "Estimated Use of Water in the United States" reports are available. Data incorporating any revisions can be found on NWISWeb.

Planetary Data System, Imaging Node

The Planetary Data System (PDS) is the Nation’s digital archive of the data collected in the course of exploring beyond our home planet. The USGS, in partnership with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, maintains all the image data provided by space missions for archival.
