Preliminary geomagnetic paleointensities from Long Valley Caldera, California
Paleointensities are being determined in order to characterize geomagnetic intensity variations during Quaternary time. Because the geomagnetic field acts as a shield against cosmic radiation, its intensity directly affects the production rate of radiocarbon (^C) in the upper atmosphere. Coe and others (1978) showed that the variation in dipole moment during Holocene time is nearly proportional to

Stability of submerged slopes on the flanks of the Hawaiian Islands, a simplified approach
Undersea transmission lines and shoreline AC-DC conversion stations and near-shore transmission lines are being considered as part of a system for transporting energy between the Hawaiian Islands. These facilities will need to be designed so that they will not be damaged or destroyed by coastal or undersea landslides. Advanced site surveys and engineering design of these facilities will require de

Chemistry of spring and well waters on Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, and vicinity
Published and new data for chemical and isotopic samples from wells and springs on Kilauea Volcano and vicinity are presented. These data are used to understand processes that determine the chemistry of dilute meteoric water, mixtures with sea water, and thermal water. Data for well and spring samples of non-thermal water indicate that mixing with sea water and dissolution of rock from weathering

Potassium-argon geochronology of a basalt-andesite-dacite arc system: the Mount Adams volcanic field, Cascade Range of southern Washington
High-precision K-Ar dating and detailed mapping have established an eruptive chronology for a Cascade stratovolcano and its surrounding array of coeval basaltic centers. The time-volume-composition data bear upon several fundamental questions concerning the long-term behavior of arc volcanoes. -from Authors

Six years of change in Lake Nyos, Cameroon, yield clues to the past and cautions for the future
The catastrophic release of gas from Lake Nyos, Cameroon, in 1986 caused substantial but incomplete mixing of the stratified water column. The post-release evolution of water-column structure has been monitored through April 1992. Changes began immediately after the event as rainfall and inflow brought dilute fluid into the surface layer. Inflow and surface mixing have gradually deepened the chemo

Volcanic mixed avalanches: A distinct eruption-triggered mass-flow process at snow-clad volcanoes
A generally unrecognized type of pyroclastic deposit was produced by rapid avalanches of intimately mixed snow and hot pyroclastic debris during eruptions at Mount St. Helens, Nevado del Ruiz, and Redoubt Volcano between 1982 and 1989. These "mixed avalanches" traveled as far as 14 km at velocities up to ∼27 m/s, involved as much as 107 m3 of rock and ice, and left unmelted deposits of single flow

Potential effects of the Hawaii Geothermal Project on ground-water resources on the island of Hawaii
In 1990, the State of Hawaii proposed the Hawaii Geothermal Project for the development of as much as 500 MW of electric power from the geothermal system in the East Rift Zone of Kilauea Volcano. This report uses data from 31 wells and 8 springs to describe the properties of the ground-water system in and adjacent to the East Rift Zone. Potential effects of this project on ground-water resources a
