Job Opening: Student Contractor to Coordinate DEIA and Environmental Justice Initiatives

The USGS Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) are hiring a student contractor position to coordinate Climate/Environmental Justice and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) activities across the network.

Overview: The Coordinator will support the National Leader for Climate Justice position in their efforts to evaluate and grow the CASC network's Environmental Justice efforts. They will coordinate network-wide efforts to enact the CASC’s draft DEIA strategic action plan and will support existing CASC programs, like the Climate Adaptation Scientists of Tomorrow (CAST) Program. In addition, they will summarize and communicate existing CASC research with and for under-represented communities.

Required expertise:

Be currently enrolled in a graduate or PhD program or have graduated within the previous year from an accredited institution.
Students with degrees in Public Administration, Public Policy, Social Science, Communications, Climatology, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, or a closely related degree are preferred.
Knowledge of DEIA best practices and climate/environmental justice.
Additional skills include: strong writing skills with an emphasis on communicating complex topics in clear language; ability to coordinate teams and networks; timeliness in task completion; creativity; ability to self-motivate and work independently; effective communication with supervisor; and attention to detail.

Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with the candidate's level of education, experience, and location, ranging from $19.86-$28.34/hr. The Government does not provide housing, meals or other living expenses while working at the principal duty station.

Estimated number of hours: Approximately 40 hours per week, starting on the date of award as negotiated. The base contract is for one year with one additional option year as needed. Hours are flexible, within reason, to accommodate educational commitments. We are looking for the best possible candidate and have flexibility around duration, location (e.g. remote, telework), and schedule (e.g., short-term, part time).
