Powell Expedition: Story Map

A story map uses visual tools such as maps, photographs, and videos to tell a story. John Wesley Powell's groundbreaking journey filled in many previously blank spaces on maps of the canyons of the West and the USGS continues to do important science along the path he bravely forged in the mid 1800s. 

Our story map will be available soon, please return to this site often. In the meantime, think about how YOU would map an unknown river and its canyons. What challenges would you face? What and who would you bring with you, and how would you record what you found?
