The USGS hosts informational booths at professional conferences including the Geological Society of America, The American Geophysical Union, National Science Teaching Association, Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), and more.
 

STEM Festivals
Flagstaff Festival of Science
The USGS has been involved in the Flagstaff Festival of Science for 30 years! The USGS campus offers an open house and participates in other events throughout the 10-day event to share science with their community.

Moab Festival of Science
The USGS participates in the Moab, Utah Festival of Science annually, offering hands-on activities and information about the work of the Southwest Biological Center.

USA Science and Engineering Festival
The USGS has participated in the USA Science and Engineering Festival. Come see us at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC on April 24-26, 2020 to learn more about USGS science.

Community and School Events
Leetown Science Center Earth Day event
On April 28, 2019, the Leetown Science Center in Kearneysville, West Virginia hosted hundreds of families at their annual Earth Day Festival. This experiential learning visit included about 20 USGS scientists volunteering their time to teach the community about the research they do, including visits to their wet lab, aquariums and fish ponds, engaging hands-on science activities, and fish-themed crafts with recycled materials.

Reston, Virginia Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE)
For over 20 years, the USGS has worked together with the Reston Association to support the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE). Once a year, ~100 students from a school near the national USGS headquarters walk from their school to the nearby watershed to observe two different streams and a lake and to complete hands-on experiments to understand the water chemistry, biology, and geology of their neighborhood.

National Take our Sons and Daughters to Work Day
The USGS participates in the national Take our Sons and Daughters to Work Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday each year. In 2019, USGS locations in Reston, VA, Augusta, ME, Columbia, MO, and Denver, CO locations hosted over 150 children. They spent their day learning about USGS science through laboratory demonstrations, hands-on experiments, Augmented Reality (AR) sandboxes and more!
