I have a B.A. in geology from SUNY Binghamton, a Ph.D. in hydrogeology from Johns Hopkins, and have worked in the USGS Water Discipline since 1977 and its National Research Program since 1980. My research is aimed at a firmer understanding of low-permeability flow and transport, rock and pore fluid mechanical interactions, anomalous fluid pressures, and coupling between geologic processes and fluid flow, phenomena that I've investigated in mid-continent Cretaceous shale and other clay-rich rocks in Europe and Canada. I've served as Birdsall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer, and on editorial boards at Water Resources Research,Groundwater, and Geofluids. My professional affiliations include the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of Washington. I received the O. E. Meinzer Award from the Geological Society of America’s Hydrogeology Division in 1991 and I am coauthor of the textbook Groundwater in Geologic Processes.
