David Wald

Biography

Dr. Wald is a Seismologist with the United States Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado and is a member of the Geophysics Faculty at the Colorado School of Mines. Wald is involved in management, operations, research and developments at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden and the new Advanced National Seismic System being built by the USGS. He developed and manages “ShakeMap”, the Community Internet Intensity Maps (popularly “Did You Feel it?”) and is responsible for developing other systems for post-earthquake response, information, and pre-earthquake mitigation.

 

Dr. Wald is a Supervisory Research Geophysicist & Real-Time Seismic Products Research and Development Coordinator, U. S. Geological Survey, at the National Earthquake Information Center.

Dr. Wald:
•    Developed and manages the USGS Advanced National Seismic System “ShakeMap”, “Did You Feel it?”, and other systems for post-earthquake response and information. New systems currently being developed under Wald’s management include the "Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER)" and "ShakeCast".
•    Scientific interests include the evaluation of strong motion amplification in basin environments; the estimation of rupture process from complex, modern and historic earthquakes using combined geodetic, teleseismic, and strong motion data; waveform modeling and inversion; analysis of their ground motion hazards; earthquake loss-estimation, and earthquake source physics.
•    Is involved in Real-Time Seismology including the generation of real-time ground motion shaking and intensity maps for damaging earthquakes.  
•    Is involved in management, operations, and developments at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden and the new Advanced National Seismic System being built by the USGS.

Wald's prior career experience includes a position at the USGS in Pasadena, California, both as a Seismologist and Visiting Associate Faculty at Caltech, and earlier as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Associate from 1993-1995. He was a consulting Seismologist with Woodward-Clyde Consultants in Pasadena from 1986 to 1988.

    Dr. Wald has been Associate Editor of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, and is on the Board of Directors of the Seismological Society of America, and is a member the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and the American Geophysical Union. Wald has appeared in interviews or articles in or on the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, Associated Press, PBS, CNN, FOX, ABC, CBS, MS-NBC, Learning Channel, History Channel, TechTV, BBC, NHK, NPR, Voice of America concerning earthquakes, earthquake ground motions, hazards and damage.

David earned his B.S. in Physics & Geology at St. Lawrence University in New York, an M.S. in Geophysics at the University of Arizona, and his Ph.D. in Geophysics from the California Institute of Technology.
