John Szemraj


Career History and Highlights

John started his Federal career as a cartographer in 1987 at the Defense Mapping Agency (now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency), then worked from 1990 - 1992 at the US Census Bureau.  He continued his career as a cartographer at the USGS working in the National Mapping Division and has been at the USGS since 1992. In 1998 John became interested in Diversity and Inclusion-related issues at the USGS and was one of several employees who facilitated “A Winning Balance” – a 4 hour diversity and inclusion course.  Using this experience, John challenged himself and decided to make a career change from Cartographer to Equal Employment Specialist.  John became part of the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity in 2000.  He spent 1 year (2007) in the EO Office at the Fish and Wildlife Service. He then returned to USGS in March of 2008 and began serving as the USGS Diversity Manager.


John earned his bachelor’s degree in geography & cartography from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
