Mark Newell, APR

Biography

Mark is public affairs professional with the U.S. Geological Survey where he specializes in communications and information activities within the Core Science Sytems mission area, with emphasis on geospatial data, mapping products and location-based services. He is accredited in public relations (APR) from the Public Relations Society of America and is largely self-taught as a social media authority. As a retired Army officer and Ranger with combat experience, he commanded soldier at various levels and served around the world as a Public Affairs Officer. He ended his military career as an Assistant Professor of Public Affairs at the Defense Information School and has been with the USGS for nearly 15 years. Besides the traditional public affairs duties of campaign planning, writing and media relations, he is also the content coordinator for The National Map websites (nationalmap.gov), the USGS Facebook page (facebook.com/USGeologicalSurvey) and runs The National Map twitter site (@USGSTNM).
