Michael J Hansen, Ph.D.

Biography

I study fisheries, with a focus on restoration of lake trout in the Great Lakes, suppression of lake trout in western lakes, and state-tribal management of walleye in inland lakes. I earned my B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, M.S. from Cornell University, and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. Prior to college, I served as a sonar technician with the U.S. Navy out of San Diego, California. I joined the faculty of the College of Natural Resources at Stevens Point as an assistant professor of fisheries in 1996.  I previously served as an Associate Scientist with EA Engineering, Science & Technology in Lincoln, Nebraska; Great Lakes sport fishery and treaty fishery specialists with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; and chief of the section of Resource Assessment and Fish Community Dynamics within the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Great Lakes Science Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  I now serve as chief of the USGS Hammond Bay Biological Station, the primary laboratory for sea lamprey research funded by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC).  I served as a co-editor of the North American Journal of Fisheries Management from 1997 through 2010.  My research is mostly in collaboration with the state of Wisconsin and other state, federal, and tribal management agencies in the Great Lakes basin.  I previously taught introductory, advanced, and graduate courses on fishery science, fishery research, fishery management, and wildlife- and fish-population dynamics.  I am very familiar with the workings of the GLFC, as former chair and member of the U.S. Section, former chair and current member of the Sea Lamprey Control Board, and member of the Sea Lamprey Research Board, and former chair the Lake Superior Technical Committee and Board of Technical Experts.
