Rebecca B Carvin
Rebecca Carvin is a Physical Scientist with the Upper Midwest Water Science Center.
Rebecca Carvin earned a B.S. in Environmental Geology from Beloit College, WI, and an M.S. in Water Resources Management (Hydrology) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She began her career with the USGS in 2006 as a hydrologic technician for the nonpoint studies team working on the Upper Pecatonica River Wisconsin Buffer Initiative pilot Project (WBI). In 2008 she finished her master’s thesis on the WBI and started as a physical scientist for the Survey. Now on the Water Quality Networks and Assessments team, she contributes to studies in stream water quality in urban and agricultural watersheds.

Edge-of-field monitoring: Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI)
Great Lakes Restoration Initiative edge-of-field monitoring focuses on identifying and reducing agricultural sources of excess nutrients which threaten the health of the Great Lakes. The USGS supports these efforts by utilizing edge-of-field monitoring to assess the quantity and quality of agricultural runoff and evaluate conservation practices that aim to reduce sediment and nutrient loss.
Upper Pecatonica River Wisconsin Buffer Initiative pilot project
The Upper Pecatonica River pilot project is testing targeted water-quality improvement strategies in small agricultural watersheds. The USGS is contributing by monitoring phosphorus and sediment at the watershed outlets, quantifying in-stream sources and sinks of phosphorus and sediment, and developing innovative approaches for quantifying sediment-related stream impairments and TMDLs.
WinSLAMM (Source Loading And Management Model): An urban area nonpoint source water-quality model for Wisconsin
The WinSLAMM model is used to identify sources of pollutants in urban stormwater runoff and to evaluate management alternatives for reducing pollutants. USGS studies provide stormwater flow and pollutant-concentration data for calibrating and verifying WinSLAMM for use in Wisconsin.
