Tim Kern
Biography
Tim Kern is the Engineering Branch Chief with the USGS Water Mission Area Enterprise Technology Office. After graduate school Kern worked as a semiconductor process engineer, section head in charge of high energy plasma processes, and computer engineer on Department of the Interior projects. Kern became Information Science Branch Chief at the USGS Fort Collins Science Center in 2013 and moved to the Enterprise Technology Office (ETO) in 2018. The ETO Engineering Branch currently provides software architecture, design, and development support to Water Mission Area priorities including:
- NWIS Modernization
- Water Prediction Work Program (2WP)
- and, Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS).
Science and Products
Using Cell Technology to Track Species Movement
The Information Science Branch explored and developed ways to track species locations using a standard cellular phone network. This technology provides more tracking data at a faster rate and lower cost than traditional satellite tracking systems. The initial implementation of this approach currently provides support for the California Condor recovery program and is being extended to include...
ScienceCache
Working with the Northern Rockies Science Center, the Information Science Branch designed and developed ScienceCache, a scientific geocaching mobile application framework. Initially developed for citizen science data collection, the application was extended to work for any field data collection effort. The lead researcher controls the data collection route, collection forms, and data...
Surface Disturbance and Reclamation Tracking Tool (SDARTT)
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) have partnered to create the Surface Disturbance Analysis and Reclamation Tracking Tool (SDARTT). SDARTT is to be the national repository for and analysis tool of disturbance data pertaining to public land operations for the BLM. Users will upload disturbance and reclamation data to SDARTT to map, analyze, and...
ScienceBase
The Information Science Branch provides Agile project management, technical oversight, software research and development, and architectural support to the USGS ScienceBase project. ScienceBase provides a number of features that scientists can use to build data collections, share data through web services, and ensure these data are preserved for use by future researchers. The project involves...
Sustaining Environmental Capital Initiative summary report
Federal agencies need credible scientific information to determine the production and value of ecosystem services in an efficient and timely manner. The U.S. Geological Survey addresses this scientific information need through the Sustaining Environmental Capital Initiative project. The project has relied on U.S. Geological Survey expertise...
