Wayne Premo
Wayne Premo is a Scientist Emeritus with the Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center
Hired by the US Geological Survey in 1984, he worked first as the laboratory manager for Dr Mitsunobu Tatsumoto under the Upper Mantle Research Project within the USGS. At that time, he oversaw the work of many post-doc visitors to Tatsumoto's laboratories including Patrick E Smith (Toronto, Canada), Yoichi Nakamura (Utsunomiya, Japan), Jun-wen Wang (Guanghou, China), Asish Basu (U Rochester NY), Keiji Misawa (Kobe, NIPR, Tokyo, Japan), Marc Brouxel (Metz, France), C. Mark Fanning (ANU, Canberra, Australia), Holly Stein (Colorado State U), Noriko Kita (U Wisconsin) among others. Subsequently he did his first research on a variety of lunar samples, investigating the various Pb isotopic components of Moon rocks and later meteorites. He was promoted to research grade in 1993, continuing to work on lunar samples for the next 4 years, but adding terrestrial research to the palette. Among the many projects he was involved in over the next 20 years, a few standout: U-Pb zircon geochronology and Pb-Sr-Nd isotopic work on the Peninsular Ranges batholith, southern California; Age and origin of the Greens Creek Mine, Admiralty Island, Alaska; Pb-Sr studies of the MVT ore deposits of the Cevennes Region, southern France, U-Pb zircon geochronology and Pb-Sr-Nd isotopic work of the Proterozoic Colorado Province; and Age and origin of the Mountain Pass REE deposit, southern California.

We have obtained precise Th-Pb internal isochron ages on monazite and bastnaesite for the world's largest known rare earth elements (REE)-Fe-Nb ore deposit, the Bayan Obo of Inner Mongolia, China. The monazite samples, collected from the carbonate-hosted ore zone, contain extremely small amounts of uranium (less than 10 ppm) but up to 0.7% ThO2. U‐Th‐Pb, Rb‐Sr, and Sm‐Nd isotopic signatures of corroded, but unaltered, black glassy tektites from Cretaceous‐Tertiary (K‐T) boundary rock on Haiti are not consistent with their derivation from an impact on MOR‐derived oceanic crust or continental regions involving middle Proterozoic or older crustal material. Seven analyses from two samples of the Lower Banded series of the Stillwater Complex, Montana, yielded a U-Pb zircon-baddeleyite age of 2705 ±4 Ma. A more precise age of 2704 ±1 Ma is obtained if we regress only five of seven analyses. In either case, the age is in very good agreement with the previously reported Sm-Nd mineral isochron age of 2701 ±8 Ma for a gabbro from the Lower Banded series.NoAuthorsW. R.
