Native American Research Assistantship Student Learns USGS Water Science

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) welcomed its first cohort of students as a part of a pilot of the Native American Research Assistantship (NARA) Program this summer. Electa Hare-RedCorn was mentored by scientists from the New England and New York Water Science Centers and taught USGS scientific protocols related to water data networks.

New York City faces accelerating inundation risk from sea-level rise, subsidence, and increasing storm intensity from natural and anthropogenic causes. A recently published study led by USGS examines the previously unquantified contribution to subsidence from the cumulative mass and downward pressure exerted by the built environment of the city.

“In late October 2012, Hurricane Sandy came ashore during a spring high tide on the New Jersey coastline, delivering hurricane-force winds, storm tides exceeding 19 feet, driving rain, and plummeting temperatures.” The storm “resulted in 72 direct fatalities … and economic impacts estimated at near $50 billion.”

Hunting for an insect the size of a poppy seed in a forest of trees that can soar 100 feet high is, admittedly, a tall task.

But after seeing the “gray ghosts” of dead eastern hemlock trees haunt forests farther south, officials in New York have been intent on preventing the same fate for the state’s eastern hemlocks as the aphid-like hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) creeps north.
